Core Properties & Mechanism

The core function of Octadecyltrimethoxysilane is to form a durable, hydrophobic protective film on the surface of inorganic materials. Its working principle is as follows:

1. Hydrolysis: Methoxy groups in silane molecules are hydrolyzed into reactive  silicone hydroxyl groups when exposed to moisture in the air or water films on material surfaces.

2. Bonding: Bonding with substrates. The generated silicone hydroxyl groups undergo dehydration-condensation with hydroxyl groups on inorganic materials (such as glass, concrete, metal oxides), forming firm Si-O-Si or Si-O-M (M = metal) covalent bonds.

3. Self-crosslinking: Silicone hydroxyl groups between silane molecules also condense with one another, forming a cross-linked siloxane network structure on the material surface.
